Joseph Stubbs, painter, was born in Bradford and studied under Thomas Robert Ablett at Bradford Grammar School. He painted flower subjects mainly and taught at Newcastle College of Art 1880-84 and from 1884-1887 at Norwich School of Art.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
In 1931 the Raeburn Gallery, London held a solo show of his work from which Queen Mary purchased a study of rhododendrons and magnolias.
Examples of his work are in the collections of Norwich Castle Museum and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.
