Past Shipley Artists

 

 

Past Shipley Artists’, describes and illustrates the lives and artwork of eighteen past professional artists from the Shipley and Saltaire areas of West Yorkshire, including sculptors, designers, illustrators, and art teachers.

The eighteen featured artists are as follows:

Section 1:  Artists born in the Shipley area: Joseph H. Cawthra, Jack Coulthard, Margaret Firth, Henrietta Gottschalck, William Charles Rushton, Herbert Scarfe, Laurence Scarfe, Fred Stead, May Stead (nee Greening), William Capeling Stevens.

Section 2: Artists who came to live and work in the Shipley area: Lise Bayer, Richard Bayer, Henry V. Clark, William Arthur Fry, Laimonis Mierens, Govinder Nazran, and Edward Renard.

There is also a chapter on the history of the Saltaire School of Art, opened in 1870 by Titus Salt.  The Art School played an important role in the careers of many of the artists featured in the book.
