Lou Sumray is a figurative painter, lives in Bradford, and is actively involved in community and educational projects.
Lou studied Fine Art to degree level at Goldsmiths College, London, graduating 1981. Her work often arises and responds to her participation in a range of public venues in the region, including the ‘9’ show at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, West Leeds Arts Festival and Bradford Festival.

She works closely with local schools, theatre, adult and community groups, encouraging all age groups to develop their creativity and confidence, and was Artist in Residence at the Canterbury Nursery School and Centre for Families and Children, 2011.

In 2005 she travelled to the Basant Kite Festival in Pakistan and her work was subsequently exhibited at the ‘Taking Flight’ exhibitions at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, and Rochdale Art Gallery. Lou was one of 30 artists chosen to participate in an arts project, making 2000 lanterns, at the Closing Ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Lou was also the 1st prize winner of the 2017 Bradford Open Exhibition at Cartwright Hall for ‘Follow Me’: a combination of her drawing, animation, and music.
