Poster Boy: The Life and Work of Frank Newbould describes and illustrates the career of Bradford-born poster designer, Frank Newbould (1887-1951), who became very successful in the 1920s and 1940s for his travel posters for London Transport and the LNER. His work was fresh, bright and appealing – and is still sought after and collected today.
The booklet traces his family background in the Manningham area of Bradford, his art education at Bradford School of Art, then his rapid rise to success in London, with the establishment of his own studio in Kensington, London. His work spanned poster designed for railways and passenger liners, as well as for the Empire Marketing Board, Cadbury Brothers, and many other companies. During WW2 he was a War Office artist, producing posters that encouraged the war effort. Financially successful, he travelled world-wide sketching and drawing for his travel and other commissions, yet his final years were blighted with illness and personal tragedy.
