‘Not Just Hockney’ Books

 

 

There are currently twelve books in print in the ‘Not Just Hockney‘ series featuring artists from the Bradford district of West Yorkshire.
A £1 for each book sold is donated to the now community-managed Silsden Town Hall – one of the main venues for the Arts in the town.
In chronological order they are:
Past Silsden Artists (2019)  Features the life and work of seven past visual artists from Silsden.   For more information:  click here
Lesser-Known Artists of the Bradford District 1860 – 1997 (2020) Presents the life and work of 20 past visual artists from across the district. For more information: click here
The Highs-The Lows. Past Artists of the Bradford District (2021). Uncovers the work and life ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ of 17 visual artists from across the district.  For more information: click here
William Rothenstein & Richard Eurich. War Artists (2021). Presents and illustrates the work of these two Official War Artists, both born in Bradford.   For more information: click here
Poster Boy. The Life and Work of Frank Newbould (2021)  Describes and illustrates the life and work of Bradford-born graphic artist, Frank Newbould, who became successful in the 1920s and 1930s for his bright and effective rail travel posters for London Transport and the LNER.  For more information: click here
Bradford District MURALS (2022) illustrates wall and other murals at 50+ locations across the Bradford district, some nearly 100 years old, featuring the work of 36+ artists; 120 mainly colour illustrations.  For more information: click here
Faith & Art. The Life and Work of Joseph Pighills (2022)  is a biography of the largely self-taught artist, Joseph (Joe) Pighills, from a working-class background and who left school at 14. He gradually became one of the best loved landscape painters in the Yorkshire region and beyond.  For more information click here
Past Portrait Artists of the Bradford District (2023)  features the lives and work of 13 past portrait artists from the Bradford district; with over 100 mainly colour portrait and figurative illustrations. For more information click here.
Silsden in Art:  (2024) The book was written to accompany the art exhibition of the same title staged at Silsden Town Hall over the Easter weekend, 2024.  There are over 100 colour images of the Silsden town, countryside and community created by painters and photographers, both past and present. Keighley School of Art (2025) The book traces the history of Keighley School of Art; for over 80 years one of the most respected and prestigious in Yorkshire.  It looks at the key people who led the School and the life and work of 16 successful local artists who started their careers at Keighley. The Courage of His Convictions: The Life and Work of George Demaine (2025).  The book illustrates the life and work of George Demaine: committed Methodist, talented painter, sculptor, model-maker, film-set designer – and a Conscientious Objector, imprisoned for his beliefs during World War One.  For more information click here.   
Past Shipley Artists (2026)  The book describes and illustrates the life and work of 18 past professional artists with birth and/or residential links with the Shipley, Saltaire and neighbouring areas.  There is also a chapter on the history of the Saltaire School of Art.   For more information click here.
