Brian Hindmarch, artist, printmaker, designer and teacher, has a studio in Ilkley and was a lecturer in Graphic Design at Bradford College, School of Art, for over 20 years, from 1992-2013.
He applies a wide range of graphic design techniques and processes, including photography, etching, letterpress, lithography, screenprint and relief print, and he has a particular interest in interpreting natural history, environment and landscape in his work, which includes original mixed media artwork and limited edition prints. He has travelled widely for inspiration, including the Hebrides, Ireland, Devon, and across Yorkshire.
Brian started his professional life as an apprentice commercial artist, with part time vocational education at both Northampton School of Art and Leicester Polytechnic. He has also studied full-time at North East London Polytechnic (Communication Design) and at the St Martin’s School of Art (Advanced Post Graduate Printmaking).
He then worked as a print technician and free-lance graphic designer, working at the University of Wales andTrent Polytechnic. He then became a graphic design lecturer, working respectively at Bournville College of Art, near Birmingham; Bristol College; Limerick School of Art; and, most extensively, at Bradford College. His most recent teaching has been at the Leeds College of Art.
Brian has exhibited his work widely, including with the Royal Academy, and the Birmingham Artists Group, and at Cartwright Hall, Bradford; the University of Bradford; Yorkshire Craft Centre; South Square Gallery, Thornton; and at Limerick Town Hall. His work regularly features in the Ilkley Art Trail. It is also sold within commercial galleries.
A collection of his text and photographs: ‘Colonsay-Elements of an Island’, was published by the House of Lochar in 2003. In recent years, Brian has lectured in Britain, Serbia, Finland, Lithuania, and Holland and has researched into book arts and issues around student literacy.
