Linda Dewart is a textile and mixed media artist based in Ilkley. Her work mainly incorporates paint with stitch, with the subject and desired result deciding the techniques and materials used, which can include clay, wire, digital print or photographic elements, and digitised embroidery.

The focus of Linda’s work is wide, including landscape, portraits, abstracts, horticultural and botanical subjects, and images conveying a sense of place (see ‘Pathways’ exhibition, below).
Linda gained a first class honours degree in textile design from Bradford College in 2001. Her work has been exhibited in Yorkshire, including at the South Square Gallery, Thornton, and at galleries in Cumbria and London. It has also regularly featured in the Ilkley Art Trail.
It was also featured on Bradford Big Screen in Centenary Square as part of a themed presentation of textile art by local artists daily during November and December, 2018.

She also worked collaboratively with another Ilkley artist, Graeme Willson, on textile designs for St. Margaret’s Church, Prestwich and for Halifax Minster, where she translated Graeme’s work into a processional banner.
Her 2014 ‘Pathways‘ exhibition at the South Square Gallery, explored human displacement from familiar territory because of traumatic events in their lives. Linda explained her approach and how her work incorporated:
…fragments of transatlantic passenger lists, and old census forms along with ridged stitching to signify ploughed fields, and cross-stitches in clusters to signify communities setting up again – many of my ancestors could not write and signed forms with an X.
