Marilyn Brophy is a Saltaire-based painter and printmaker who works predominantly in oil and acrylics, as well as producing limited edition relief and dry point prints.
Marilyn attended Bingley Grammar School and later studied Secondary Education, Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Bradford, where she graduated.
Largely self-taught as an artist, she has painted all of her adult life. Her current artwork is influenced by her experiences in Guyana in the 1990s, where she worked for two years for the Ministry of Education. She has said:
During this time I painted prolifically and discovered ways, increasingly more abstract, that were new to me of recording experience, culture, people and places. After a lifetime spent under grey Yorkshire skies I found colour and have held on to it.
Marilyn’s artwork often presents a blend of realism and the surreal. It has been exhibited across the West Yorkshire region, including a solo show at Shipley Library in 2016, a group show at the Otley Courthouse Gallery in 2016, and at the Bradford Open at Cartwright Hall in 2017, with her work, ‘Spirit of Titus’.
Marilyn is an active member of the Guiseley Art Club and her work has also often featured in their exhibitions.
