Heather Swain is a printmaker who works from her home studio in Baildon. The landscape of the Bradford district and beyond is an important creative influence for her work:
Ways of seeing and expressing the environment and the subject are a constant inspiration. I live in West Yorkshire and work in my studio at home. The local countryside, landscapes, walks, wildlife, gardens, even a single flower or leaf can be rich sources of ideas. Sometimes prints are more abstract in nature as a result of an imagined or re-invented detail or idea. It’s always fun!
Heather attended Bingley Grammar School then studied Fashion and Textiles at Liverpool College of Art and Design to degree level, graduating in 1979.
She worked as a Subject Team Leader, Art & Design, in a Bradford Secondary School before embarking on a freelance career in printmaking, specialising in linocut prints. This has included leading workshops in linocut print making and Chine Colle at a venue in Haworth.
Heather had a solo exhibition of her artwork at the South Square Art Centre in Thornton in December and January , 2022/23 and her work is displayed and sold through The Bingley Gallery , the Betty Moore Gift Shop in Haworth, and from her own website, see below. Heather’s work was also featured in the ‘Our Turn’ Bradford Art Show at The Loading Bay, Bradford, during December 2025.
I’m passionate about printmaking! The pleasure of lifting the paper to reveal the image, both during and at the final stage of a piece is exciting and so addictive.
