Catherine Slater is a local textile artist working mainly with her own handmade felt. Her work combines traditional craft with contemporary designs and her designs include landscapes and seascapes, as well as wearable art, including jewellery. She has said of the inspiration for her designs:
I enjoy walking on the hills and moors of northern England, and many of my designs are inspired by the changing light, rhythms and textures of the natural world.

Catherine also teaches feltmaking part-time within educational and community venues, and runs her own freelance workshops for beginners, and for those with more experience, in felting and non-toxic dyeing.

Catherine studied Sculpture and History of Art as part of a Honours degree in Education and Art, and later completed a part-time four year City and Guilds course in Creative Studies and Embroidery Skills.

She is a member of the International Feltmakers Association and Textilia3 – an exhibiting group of northern textile artists with the aim of challenging the boundaries of traditional embroidery and moving forward with new techniques and processes.
Catherine’s work has been widely exhibited in both solo and group shows in Britain and overseas, including with the Textilia 3 group. Exhibiting venues have included Farfield Mill, Sedbergh; The Piece Hall, Halifax; Northern Lights Gallery, Huddersfield; and Industrial Museum, Bradford. Catherine has also featured her work at both the Ilkley and Saltaire Art Trails. Internationally her work has been exhibited in France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
