Madeleine Phiri is a German-born photographic artist, living and working now in the Shipley area.
Madeleine studied photography and digital imaging at Buckinghamshire New University, graduating in 2009. Since that time she has worked as a professional photographer, working commercially for clients and producing photographic art work for sale. She also works as a tutor at Leeds College of Art, teaching photographic techniques to students of all ages.
Although Madeleine works with colour, particularly in a commercial context, she has a particular interest in black & white photography and in darkroom techniques. She says of this:
My passion for photography, especially the traditional processes, started when my aunt took me to her school darkroom after photographing me and her cat on a snowy day. I was only 5 years old, but the smell of the chemicals, the red light and the magic of the photo appearing has always stayed with me.

Madeleine is a member of the Saltaire Inspired group of artists and her work regularly features in the Saltaire Arts Trail. Her work has also featured in exhibitions at the Kirkgate Centre, Shipley; in ‘Breathing in Bloom’ at York, the ‘Wish you were here’, a postcard exhibition at Woodend Gallery in Scarborough, and and in the Bradford Open at Cartwright Hall, 2015. In 2016 Madeleine was speaker at a Royal Photographic Society (RPS) sponsored event at Whatton: ‘Discover the art in photography’, and her work: ‘Summertime and the Living is [not] easy in Aleksandrovka’ was featured in the autumn edition of the RPS journal, 2016.
