JOLLANDS, Rose

 

 

Rose Jollands is a Bradford-based visual artist with her main focus on painting. She says of her work:

I like to upcycle old picture frames as a base for paintings, pouring thick homemade gesso over the whole frame then add paints and pigments to create a tactile surface full of atmospheric shades.

Onto this I explore image making ideas, usually landscapes, both urban and rural. The scenes are from photos I take with my phone while out and about, sometimes a nice country walk or just looking up at the sky any day, it’s all worth recording and valuing; after all each visual moment is extraordinarily unique. The concept of noticing the banal and framing it shows most in my photography but this informs my painting.

Rose was born in Wales in 1982 and grew up in Leicester.  She struggled with dyslexia at school, but was encouraged by her creative family, and mother in particular, to express her ideas through art.  Rose initially studied practical art and design courses at Leicester College, leading to more advanced studies at Huddersfield University, where she gained a diploma in Contemporary Art in 2011.

 

 

 She later studied at Leeds Beckett University, where she graduated in Fine Art in 2020.

My early jobs included creating craft items for sale with family.  Later I became successfully self-employed selling vintage collectables on eBay for many years whilst living in Wales and attending art courses at Aberystwyth university. I’m now settled in Bradford and involved in various creative roles, including volunteering as a letterpress printer at Bradford Industrial Museum.

 

Rose’s artwork has been exhibited on a number of occasions at the Apothecary Gallery, Thornton, as well as at the Trapezium Art Gallery in Bradford. She has also showed collages made from prints created using old wooden and metal type and antique machinery while volunteering at Bradford Industrial Museum.  She has also shown her work at the Higher Ground cafe, Saltaire, South Square Arts Centre, Thornton, and has exhibited in the 2024 Saltaire Arts Trail. Rose will also be exhibiting at Bingley Gallery in June 24, 2024.
