Ernest Alfred Sallis Benney (1894-1966), painter and designer, was born in Bradford. He initially studied art locally and then later at the Royal College of Art in London.

He became a well-regarded art teacher and later became Principal of art schools, including Cheltenham School of Art, Norwich School of Art, Hull School of Art and Brighton School of Art. He exhibited his own work in London, at the Royal Academy, and in the provinces.

As Principal of Brighton School of Art, Benney introduced new departments in theatre and cinema arts, including set design, scene painting, theatrical model-making, wig making and theatrical make-up. Under his guidance the School built up an international reputation for excellence and innovation. The Sallis Benney Theatre at the University of Brighton was named in his honour.
