Jacky Al-Samarraie is a graphic designer and founder/owner of The Art Rooms in Saltaire, where she designs and produces a range of prints, cards, stationery, and homeware.
After a 20+ year career in social services, Jacky returned to college to study art, initially part-time, in Interior Design, continuing at HNC level in Graphic Design, before graduating in 2003 from Bradford College with a first class honours degree in Graphic Media Communication.
Interviewed by The Saltaire Review in April 2016, Jacky said of her graduation:
I feel this has been one of my greatest life achievements, as it was more a personal achievement. Throughout my life I’d had a desperate need to bring creativity into it, but there weren’t any opportunities at school, so apart from encouragement from my parents I never believed I was any good. Having the opportunity to return to college was the start of my new life.

She began to develop her ideas and a business plan, and in 2007 Jacky opened The Art Rooms in Victoria Road, Saltaire, to showcase her designs. She initially focused on greeting cards and china mugs, but has gradually increased the range of designs and products over subsequent years.
Jacky now sells her work online, at The Art Rooms, and through a range of retail outlets, including John Lewis, The National Trust, The Woodland Trust, The House of Lords and Tate Modern.
Her distinctive landscape designs are characterised by silhouettes of trees, people or man-made features juxtaposed with blocks of colour, and her landscape range of greeting card designs won her the Henries Award (Best Art Range) in 2011. Customers using her website can tailor chosen scenes with their own blocks of colour to suit their own taste or décor.
